18:53 a 500-pound black bear, strikes again near Lake Tahoe

Hank the Tank strikes again.

The 500-pound black bear has damaged more than 30 properties around Lake Tahoe, and last week broke into yet another home in an endless quest for a quick meal.

Known by residents as Hank the Tank, the giant bear has eluded capture for more than seven months, according to Peter Tira, a spokesman for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“What’s problematic about this bear is how large it is,” Tira told SF Gate on Sunday. “It’s learned to use that size and strength to break into a number of occupied residences, bursting through the garage door or front door. It’s pretty frightening.”

The bear is responsible for more than 150 incident reports in the region straddling Northern California and Nevada. A Friday break-in at a residence in the Tahoe Keys neighborhood is the latest, according to CBS Sacramento.

The bear smashed a window and squeezed into the house on Catalina Drive while the residents were at home. Police responded and banged on the outside of the house until Hank exited out the back door and disappeared into the woods.

Also known as Jake or Yogi or simply Big Guy, the bear is what Tira described as a “severely food habituated bear” that has “lost all fear of people” and thinks of them as a food source.

A homeowners association agreed during a meeting last week to allow state wildlife personnel to capture the bear. Previous trapping efforts, which are generally more successful in wooded settings, have proven futile in residential areas where the bear has become acclimated, SF Gate reported.

After the break-in Friday, officials collected DNA evidence to make an accurate match if they capture the bear. If Hank is captured, officials said the bear could be relocated to accredited facilities such as zoos and wildlife sanctuaries, Tira said.

“You relocate it to the wilderness, and they starve because they’re not used to hunting for food,” Tira said.

Killing the bear is hopefully a last resort, said Joby Cefalu, a board member with the homeowners association.

“Nobody on our board took lightly the situation of depredation,” Cefalu told the Los Angeles Times. “We’re meant to coexist. Unfortunately, this is a human problem.”

Ant-Man star Evangeline Lilly faces backlash after urging PM Trudeau to sit down with vax mandate protestors, and some fans want her to leave the MCU.

Star of the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Evangeline Lilly has stirred up controversy again with her stance on mandatory vaccines. Lilly made a name for herself with her first starring role as Kate Austen in ABC's award-winning drama, Lost, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. In the 2015 film Ant-Man, Lilly joined the MCU as Hope van Dyne, the daughter of the original Ant-Man and Wasp, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), who takes over her mother's mantle and becomes a partner to Scott Lang's (Paul Rudd) Ant-Man. Quantumania will be Lilly's fourth MCU film in the role.

Lately, Lilly has been making headlines outside of the MCU, and the Canadian-born actress has been vocal about her home country's response to the Covid-19 virus. The Canadian government currently requires public servants to be vaccinated, and if they were not fully vaccinated by October 29, 2021, they would be put on unpaid administrative leave. In response to these vaccine mandates, a series of protests and blockades calling themselves the Freedom Convoy began in Canada in January. Lilly also opposed the vax mandates and posted on Instagram that she supported the convoy's cause and was attending a rally in DC herself, inciting backlash from MCU fans.

Still, the backlash has not stopped Lilly from voicing her stance. This week, Lilly addressed Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau in a video posted by Bridge City News, a program that has been following the Freedom Convoy closely, and urged him to sit down with the convoy's protesters. Lilly's message stirred up backlash yet again with Marvel fans with some even calling for Lilly to leave the MCU.

The Wasp actress has been creating controversy since the beginning of the pandemic. In March 2020, Lilly stated that she would refuse to social distance out of fear "of a respiratory flu," but later rescinded the statement after backlash, apologizing to those who were suffering because of the virus. Despite that apology, Lilly has continued to be vocal about her views on the pandemic, even attributing the difficulty she felt filming Quantumania to social distancing practices.

At this point, it would be difficult and costly for Marvel to recast Wasp, since Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania finished filming last fall and is now in post-production. Although Disney has been quick to fire others before when making controversial posts on social media, it seems unlikely that Lilly would get the boot, especially when so many compare her posts to those made by fellow MCU actress Letitia Wright. Still, with Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania's release date so far off and Evangeline Lilly's continued willingness to speak out for her beliefs, there's a chance the MCU may get a new Wasp for its future phases.

Modern Batman movies tend to overlook the character's origins. Matt Reeves wants to remind everyone that Batman is the World's Greatest Detective.

Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie, The Batman, holds the exciting promise of giving audiences a new take on the Caped Crusader, while also returning the character to his roots. With Robert Pattinson wearing the mantle of the Bat, there’s been no shortage of curiosity and speculation surrounding the movie and how it will differ from previous incarnations of Batman. The way things are shaping up, The Batman is going to take the character all the way back to his comic book origins as a detective.

Batman is one of the best-known superheroes in the world, despite not actually having superpowers of his own. He’s seen a wide array of vastly different interpretations over the years, from the campy silliness of Adam West's Batman TV shows to the violent grimdark character who appeared in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. His first appearance, though, was over 80 years ago in Detective Comics. Following the success of comic strip characters like Dick Tracy, who debuted in 1931, Detective Comics #1 was published in 1937, telling stories in the “hard-boiled detective” genre that had become popular during the 1920s in Prohibition-era America. The stories quickly became influenced by masked crime-fighting characters like The Green Hornet, before eventually leading to the first appearance of Batman in 1939 in Detective Comics #27.

Robert Pattinson’s comments in a recent interview show that this is the direction Reeves has taken the hero in, noting how his first reaction to the movie's opening scene was, “Oh, this actually is a detective story.” Pattinson has been quite public about his love of Batman movies, as well as his intent to portray a stranger version of Bruce Wayne. The Batman will show a rather different character from Christian Bale’s version of Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, in which he's a high society socialite. In multiple interviews, Pattinson has described his Bruce Wayne as a deeply traumatized person who uses being the Batman as a warped form of self-therapy. So his version of Bruce obsessively throwing himself into unraveling mysteries gets back to the character's roots while also giving it a modern spin.

With Matt Reeves' previous movies being highly character-driven and Robert Pattinson's in-depth exploration, The Batman promises a more personal, psychological look at the Caped Crusader that will lay out more of his worldview. The idea of Batman returning to his origins as a true detective is certainly an exciting one, particularly after recent movies have their focus largely on him punching his enemies into submission. An oddball version of Batman may offer a refreshing change of pace, particularly with an oddball actor like Pattinson being behind him.

A new behind-the-scenes video from the set of the Wonka movie reveals Timothée Chalamet and a new child character. The 26-year-old actor is coming off an incredible year in which he starred in Wes Anderson's ode to journalism, The French Dispatch, and two films nominated for Best Picture: Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi epic, Dune, and Adam McKay's climate crisis satire, Don't Look Up. Since September 2021, Chalamet has been hard at work on the much-ballyhooed Willy Wonka prequel movie.

From Paddington director Paul King and writer Simon Farnaby, Wonka will serve as a prequel to Roald Dahl's 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which has been adapted into a feature film twice before - Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in 1971 and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005. The prequel film will follow Chalamet as a younger version of the eccentric chocolatier during the early days of his career as the iconic candy-maker. Wonka has also assembled an impressive supporting cast which includes recent-Oscar-darling Olivia Colman, Keegan Michael-Key, Sally Hawkins, and Rowan Atkinson.

Now, fans are treated to another peek at Chalamet on set, courtesy of Wonka News on Twitter. The behind-the-scenes video shows the actor on set in full Victorian garb, replete with Willy Wonka's signature top hat and cane. The set video also reveals a new child character played by Calah Lane.

This is just the latest in a long line of looks at Chalamet in character on the Wonka set. The first official glimpse was provided by the actor himself, and fans were then able to snap subsequent set photos while he was filming in the United Kingdom. This actually isn't even the first video to surface from the Wonka production, as onlookers were previously able to capture footage of Chalamet singing on the film's set. While Wonka won't be a full-fledged musical per se, it has been confirmed to include several musical numbers.

Though Chalamet has been seen in action several times before, this is the first look at Lane on set. The child actor has appeared in NBC's popular series This Is Us, though she will be making her feature film debut with Wonka. It's also nice to see Chalamet finally interacting with another actor on set, considering he's been spotted solo several times before. While nothing is known about Lane's character yet, much more will be revealed as production of the prequel film hums along and the marketing campaign eventually commences.

As Chinese officials tout the containment of COVID-19 at the Winter Olympics, stories of poor treatment of athletes in Beijing's "quarantine hotels" continue to run rampant.

With 10,000 athletes, journalists and dignitaries arriving in Beijing for the games, Chinese officials implemented a number of guidelines aimed at mitigating the spread of the virus, like the use of quarantine hotels to house asymptomatic individuals who test positive. As a result of these guidelines, Chinese Olympic officials described their COVID mitigation as "working."

"Thanks to stringent and effective COVID-19 countermeasures, the Games has proceeded smoothly so far with the risk of infections under control," the state-run Xinhua News Agency wrote on Monday, noting that there was only a single positive COVID case within the "closed-loop" of the quarantine zone.

"A range of strict protocols are in place to ensure the safety of competitors, officials, international media staff and spectators," the report said, adding that Brian McCloskey, chief of the Beijing 2022 Medical Expert Panel, said at a press conference last week that closed-loop system "met our expectations."

However, athletes that have been confined to the quarantine hotels have told a different story, one of poor living conditions and a lack of available food.

One of these Olympians, Russian biathlete Valeria Vasnetsova, wrote on social media about her experience in one of the hotels.

"My stomach hurts, I'm very pale and I have huge black circles around my eyes. I want all this to end. I cry every day. I'm very tired," Vasnetsova said on Instagram. She shared a photo of what she said was "breakfast, lunch and dinner for five days already," which included plain pasta, an undetermined sauce, a few potatoes and some charred meat.

"Today I ate all the fat they serve instead of meat because I was very hungry," Vasnetsova said, adding that her "bones are already sticking out." She also claimed that the team doctor received much better food than the athletes.

Vasnetsova and Belgian skeleton racer Kim Meylemans both said that their food and overall treatment improved after they publicly voiced their concerns.

Despite this, other athletes and officials have also called out the purported substandard living conditions. This includes Dirk Schimmelpfennig, the head of the German delegation to the Beijing Games, who called the quarantine hotels "unreasonable."

Schimmelpfennig originally spoke out after discovering the living conditions of Eric Frenzel, a German gold medalist in the Nordic combined who tested positive for COVID. The delegation head told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the athletes required bigger rooms and food deliveries on a more regular schedule.

However, as the outcry continues, Chinese officials appear to have been quick to improve conditions within the hotels. A spokesperson for the Russian biathlete team reportedly showed a picture of Vasnetsova's latest meal, which consisted of fresh salmon, sausages, and vegetables, and also said that a stationary bike was being installed in her room.

The bettering of living conditions was also upheld by Australian biathlete Britteny Cox, who reportedly told Xinhua: "I actually think the bubble is really excellent. I feel really safe, I feel like the village is incredibly clean and healthy."

"They have done a stellar job with the whole COVID protocols," American freestyle skier Aaron Blunck reportedly added.

Newsweek has reached out to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for comment.

Jean Claude Van Damme has been an action movie icon since the 1980s, but the Belgian actor says that his next action film will be his last one.

Belgian actor and martial arts superstar Jean Claude Van Damme is planning to retire from action filmmaking after releasing one last pulse-pounding, bare-knuckle adventure. After having made a name for himself in the Belgian martial arts world, Van Damme moved to America in the early '80s to pursue a dream of acting. After playing a few smaller roles in movies like No Retreat, No Surrender and War and Remembrance, he burst onto the American martial arts movie scene as the leading man in 1988's Bloodsport.

Following the success of Bloodsport, the fact that Van Damme was officially an action star was undeniable. He'd lead nearly 20 movies in the next ten years alone and, to this day, hasn't gone more than a year in between projects since Bloodsport. Van Damme's celebrity continued to rise throughout the '80s and '90s thanks to hits like Universal Soldier and Timecop. He even starred in Hard Target, the American directorial debut of cinematic gunfight maestro John Woo. While much of Van Damme's output of late has been relegated to home and streaming releases, he returned to the big screen in The Expendables 2. Now, after 30-plus years of fistfights, shootouts, and car chases, Van Damme is leaving it all behind.

According to Deadline, Van Damme has announced his latest project, What’s My Name?, will be the final action movie he will work on, saying that after "living in hotels the past 30 years," he's ready for some change. Van Damme will play a fictionalized version of himself suffering from amnesia following a car accident. On a mission to restore his memory, Van Damme will have to square off against a who's-who of enemies and actors returning from his previous movies. Van Damme seems to think these rematches will be the perfect farewell to his action era. Check out his comments below:

I wanted to leave the stage but with a revisit of my career, starting with Bloodsport, the one where I started to become famous. I want this to be a new Bloodsport but on a higher level. In the film, I am on my way down in terms of career, and as I come out of a premiere of another action movie, I am not happy because I’ve been living in hotels the past 30 years, which is actually true. We’re going to bring real elements from my real life and what happened to me. I came from Belgium, all the way to Hollywood. I succeeded, I failed, I came back. So I’m walking out on the street after the premiere, and boom! — a car hits me because I’m drunk. When I wake up from the impact, I don’t know what’s my name, and no one recognizes me.

What’s My Name? will be directed by Jeremy Zag from a sсript by Oscar-winning Green Book writer Nick Vallelonga and Paul Sloan (based on a story by Van Damme). Longtime Van Damme aficionados will surely relish seeing villains of the past return as the hero kicks and splits his way down memory lane, though it could prove bittersweet knowing it's for the last time. The movie's plot may seem strangely self-aware for typical Van Damme action fare, but this actually won't be the first time he's played a meta variant of himself on film. In 2008's JVCD, Van Damme also portrayed a semi-fictionalized version of himself and must thwart a bank robbery when he's taken hostage.

Van Damme didn't confirm whether or not he'll still pursue other non-action projects, but either way, his exiting the genre marks the end of an era. But at least it seems like he'll be leaving in style and offering more than a little bit of fan service in the process. With the planned roster of villains planned to be essentially an almost greatest hits of Jean Claude Van Damme's classic foes, What's My Name? will hopefully be a worthy send-off.

21:25 Uncharted: What The Scottish Villain Actually Said To Tom Holland's Nathan

Here's a translation of what the Scottish henchman says to Tom Holland's Nathan Drake in Ruben Fleischer's long-awaited Uncharted movie.

Ruben Fleischer's Uncharted movie has a Scottish henchman threatening Tom Holland's Nathan Drake confusing both the character and a lot of the audience, but what exactly does he say? It's been a long and arduous journey that only really felt over with the release of the first Uncharted trailer. The movie, based on the video game franchise of the same name by Naughty Dog, has been in various stages of development since the mid-2000s when the first game was released and became an instant hit. It wasn't until Fleischer joined in early 2020 that things really got underway.

Fleischer is known for getting troubled Sony Pictures projects out of development hell, through production, and onto screens in a relatively short amount of time; he's recently done so with Venom, Zombieland: Double Tap, and now Uncharted. However, while fans of the video games may have expected a straight adaptation, Sony's Uncharted movie tells an origin story for young Nathan Drake, now portrayed by Holland instead of Mark Wahlberg, who was originally cast in the part in the 2010s but is now playing Sully. It absolutely does draw on the Uncharted games, and feels more like a video game movie than most adaptations because of its structure, but there's freshness to the story too.

Uncharted introduces the world to Tom Holland's Nathan Drake and Sully, who are wrapped up in a mission that takes them around the world against a growing group of villains, including Antonio Banderas' nefarious millionaire. One of those villains was introduced in the Uncharted trailer's final scene, which saw Drake come face-to-face with a Scottish henchman, played by Steven Waddington (who is billed merely as The Scotsman, but is called "Scotty" in the movie by his boss). The Scottish henchman's accent is made a joke at several points during the movie, with his first meeting with Holland's hero kicking off the gag as Nathan Drake can't understand his strong Scottish accent. The villain says " You shouldnae have come out to play with the big boys, wean, cos you're about to get a proper Scottish welcome." The translation is simply the kind of threat henchmen always trade it, amounting to "you've made a terrible mistake and you will regret it".

Translated directly, Uncharted's Scottish henchman says, "You shouldn't have come out to play with the big boys, young child/little one ("wean" generally means young child, and derives from "wee one") because you're about to get a proper Scottish welcome." The scene plays off as a joke, particularly because of Nathan's response and that it comes at the end of the Uncharted trailer, but there is some truth to it on a meta-level. Holland's casting as Nathan was met with some backlash since game fans weren't interested in an origin story. This comment builds on that by calling out Nathan Drake being young and, in some cases, out of his depth. A "proper Scottish welcome" plays on the idea of Caledonian characters generally being tough, though one detail suggests Scotty doesn't come from a typically "rough" area.

Waddington's Scottish villain appears throughout the movie, even as other villains rise and fall, and is very much presented as a formidable figure. His final line in the movie is a confusing "for Hibernian!", almost as a battle cry. The confusing thing there, of course, is that "Hibernian" relates to the Irish, but this usage presumably relates to the soccer team Scotty supports - Hibernian FC of Edinburgh, from where he must hail. The club is seemingly very close to his heart if they occupy that significant a place in his priorities.

By that point, Tom Holland's Nathan Drake has blossomed more into a more recognizable version of the character, even picking up the gun holster he's known to wear in the games. This first Uncharted movie is undoubtedly an origin story in every sense, as Nathan Drake is learning from Sully and becoming accustomed to his way of life. It won't be until Uncharted 2 (or later, if sequels are made) that Nathan Drake will morph into the character that fans are acquainted with from Naughty Dog's Uncharted series.

MANCHESTER – Manchester United had to be willing to only get one point after being held 1-1 by Southampton in the 2021-2022 Premier League match on Saturday (12/2/2022) night WIB. The Red Devils actually had taken the lead in the 21st minute thanks to a goal from Jadon Sancho, but Southampton replied in the second half.

The equalizing goal for the visitors took place in the 48th minute through the action of Che Adams. Because of Adams' goal, Man United's victory at Old Trafford immediately dispersed.

22:19 France travel update: COVID test rules to be dropped for vaccinated travellers

COVID test reports will no longer be required for vaccinated travellers visiting France in the coming days. France has announced that it will be dropping the mandatory requirement of a negative COVID test for vaccinated travellers travelling from outside the European Union. This move comes as the country continues to register a drop in daily infection numbers, as stated by Europe Minister Clement Beaune.

While talking to the media, he added that they restored testing requirements in December due to the outbreak of the Omicron variant. However, they will soon announce that tests will no longer be required for vaccinated people in the coming days.

As of now, anyone coming from outside the EU, including Britain, is required to provide a negative test result that has been taken 48 hours prior to their travel, regardless of vaccination status. The Minister stated that this week, there will probably be a new European protocol for vaccinated people arriving from outside the EU, with eased measures.

EU members on January 25 agreed to better coordinate their travel rules, especially for those crossing borders within the bloc. While the surge in Omicron variant has prompted Italy and Denmark, for example, to impose recent negative test requirements for entry by fellow EU residents as well as vaccination proof, such strict rules have reportedly irritated officials in Brussels.

As per the reports, France started lifting a series of COVID restrictions this month, and announced that nightclubs will reopen from February 16, while concerts and sporting events will also be allowed to take place.

A new billboard for the upcoming DC film The Batman depicts one of the Riddler's victims duct-taped in a giant bat. The Batman is the first DC film since 2019's Joker to take place outside the DCEU. Set to feature a new incarnation of the Caped Crusader in the form of Robert Pattinson, The Batman is helmed by Cloverfield director Matt Reeves and will finally premiere in March 2022 after facing a slew of delays due to the pandemic.

While much is still unknown about the plot of The Batman, it has been revealed that the story will follow Bruce Wayne in his second year of crime-fighting as he attempts to track down the Riddler (Paul Dano). While many of the trailers for The Batman feature Dano's voice as the Riddler, he is hardly seen at all. Still, his brutal methods and mind games are on full display as he uses duct tape to cover many of his victim's faces, writing over them in what looks to be blood in some case. One of the only times Dano's Riddler is revealed in the trailer, he is unraveling a roll of duct tape, giving the haunting impression that he just murdered someone.

A new billboard for The Batman uses this image to their advantage. thebatmanig has posted an image of a billboard in Germany which features a giant duct-taped bat, with what is clearly the outline of one of the Riddler's victim's in the center. What makes the image the most haunting is the fact that the body is not an image but actually protrudes from the billboard, making it look frighteningly real. It is certainly a billboard that won't be soon forgotten by anyone who drives by it. See the full post below:

The billboard also features the words "No More Lies." It has been heavily hinted at in The Batman trailers that the film will feature a subplot that involves Bruce Wayne discovering that his family was involved in corruption in Gotham City. The words "No More Lies" along with one of the Riddler's victims implies that he is motivated to make Bruce Wayne come clean about his family, however, the capacity to which the Riddler is involved in the Waynes' dealings has yet to be revealed.

All in all, this is most definitely an effective and creative billboard for The Batman. It raises many tantalizing questions about The Batman, while also being just gruesome enough to stick with anyone who sees it for quite some time. Honestly, if the billboard didn't say The Batman at the top, it might initially frighten some people when they see it. With that said, like any good piece of marketing, fans will have no choice but to go see The Batman in March to finally have their questions answered.

22:26 Tonga Sees Small COVID Outbreak Tied to Ships Bringing Aid After Earthquake

Tonga went into lockdown Wednesday after a small outbreak of COVID-19 was reported from workers believed to be handling a shipment of supplies needed after a volcanic eruption triggered a tsunami that devastated the islands.

There had been concerns with international ships and planes delivering supplies potentially bringing COVID to the Pacific nation, which had mostly managed to keep COVID at bay. The concerns became reality when two wharf workers tested positive Tuesday after handling incoming cargo shipments, local media Matangi Tonga Online reported.

The two cases were detected after conducting routine testing on frontline wharf workers. Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni said five cases have been reported thus far with the patients placed in hospital isolation. One person has recovered, but remains in quarantine, local media reported.

The Minister of Health Hon. Dr. Saia Piukala told local media the three new cases include a spouse and two children, aged three and four, who were in close contact with one of the wharf workers.

An immediate lockdown was issued following the reported cases and is scheduled to last until Sunday. Limited businesses such as shops, gas stations, and roadside food vendors are allowed to open starting Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Matangi Tonga reported.

It is unclear exactly which shipment the wharf workers picked up the infection from. Sovaleni said in a news conference Tuesday night they are trying to identify which ship could have been responsible.

"We have the record of ships that had been here at a time that could have spread this virus. We are looking at goods that were offloaded," he said.

The Australian Navy ship, HMAS, had 23 reported COVID cases on board when it docked in Tonga to unload aid in a quarantine zone, Reuters reported. The Australian Defense Force's Chief of Joint Operations Greg Bilton said it doesn't appear the infection came from their ship, but samples from the two workers would be sent to Australia for testing.

At least 726 COVID tests have been conducted on the island so far. It's not clear how many people have come into close contact with the dockworkers, but the Tonga government released a list of possible locations for transmission including a bank, church, a kindergarten school and several shops, The Associated Press reported.

Piukala said they have been able to identify at least seven people who were in close contact with the workers but they've have all tested negative. The individuals were placed in home isolation as a precaution, local media reported.

Paula Taumoepeau, a business owner, told AP Friday that Tonga has a small hospital and limited resources, but he's not sure how the health system will hold up.

"We are lucky we've had two years to get our vax rate pretty high, and we had a pretty immediate lockdown," he said.

According to local media, 87 percent of Tonga's eligible population is fully vaccinated while 97 percent have received at least their first dose.

21:27 China Has Fewer COVID Cases Than Any Nation, Games Are Safe, Official Says

Olympic officials said Wednesday that they are not worried about the rise in COVID-19 cases in China and that the Games are safe as the country has fewer cases than any other nation.

The opening ceremony for the 2022 Winter Olympics is set for Friday, but even with Beijing's "closed-loop" system, 17 COVID cases were reported in the area Wednesday, with an average of 31 new daily cases in the capital city over the past three days, the Associated Press reported.

The closed-loop system was designed to keep Olympic athletes, sports officials and workers contained in a specific area. The zone prevents the public from entering and participants from leaving to reduce the spread of COVID to the general public.

Olympic medical adviser Brian McCloskey said 232 positive cases have been reported in connection with the Games since January 23. Of those, 163 have been from the airport and 69 from the closed loop, but it's not concerning for Olympic officials, WION reported.

"Virtually every country in the world at the moment has a higher level of COVID than China," McCloskey said, according to AP.

More than 54,000 tests have been conducted since January 23. McCloskey said he expects that the daily number of positive cases will drop once the number of people arriving starts to level out, WION reported.

"They won't go down immediately, but when we get to a stable number of people, then we expect it to go down," he said.

The risk for COVID cases in the loop is higher for the first few days because the virus doesn't always show up on a test right away because it can incubate slowly, McCloskey said. After about five days, "the risk comes down to equivalent to the local population risk—very, very low," he added, according to AP.

After a spike in cases in Beijing, millions of residents have been tested several times. Neighborhoods with reported cases have been sealed off to slow the spread instead of implementing a widespread lockdown in the host city, according to AP.

Beijing reported six confirmed cases of the Omicron variant since January 15 and 115 locally transmitted cases, AP reported.

McCloskey said that of the 232 positive tests, 11 people with symptoms have been treated at a hospital, but "none of those are seriously ill in any way," AP reported.

Time reported that U.S. bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor and her husband, Nic Taylor, who is an alternate on the men's bobsled team, tested positive, along with their son, two days after arriving in Beijing but were asymptomatic.

McCloskey said during a press conference this month that there was never a goal to have zero cases in the Olympics, but "the target is zero spread within the closed loop," USA Today reported.
